Pregnancy Cravings

One thing people ask me a lot is what kinds of cravings I’ve been having over the course of my pregnancy. Of course the cliché ice cream and pickles usually comes up, but luckily, I've never had a craving for that, at least served together! I've heard that no one pregnancy is like another, and this time around, that couldn't be more true. And each trimester is different from the last.

My first trimester, I wanted nothing to do with meat of any kind. You could have put a juicy, right off the grill and seasoned to perfection filet mignon or NY Strip in front of me and I would have maybe tried one bite and left the rest for Matt. So, while I had a food aversion, I really didn't have any major specific CRAVINGS.

Now that I'm nearly through my 2nd trimester, I'm realizing just how different my Baby Bean pregnancy is from my Sprout pregnancy. With Piper Jayne, I ate a bowl of ice cream every night from my 2nd trimester on, and bullseye candies (also known as caramel creams) were my go to snack throughout the day. Health, huh?! This time around, I've remained somewhat healthy compared to pregnancy #1, with much less chocolate and ice cream consumed. But, the more pregnant I get, the worse my resolve is.

Lately, it's been the breakfast combo from Subway - for only $3 I can get an egg white, bacon and cheese flatbread sandwich (with Spinach and hot peppers)with a drink. All that for only $3 sounds like a great deal, until you realize you've bought one every morning for the last week and a half. And now, I have a new one - thanks to the Costco sample lady who has no regard for my waistline - Vanilla Belgium Waffles that are a little piece of heavenly goodness in your mouth. MMMM, just writing about it makes me want to break open the one I have in my office desk drawer, pop it in the toaster oven, shut my door and savor every last crumb of it (all in time to still make it to my next meeting).

It's not just the hormones that makes it OK to indulge in the cravings - it's the maternity pants. For a non-preggo to graze the left over desserts on a daily basis at work, they’d soon notice the result of their poor decisions in how their pants fit. But when you’re wearing pants with a giant nylon pouch in them that lets your belly expand, you never get that little warning sign that says it’s time to cut off the dessert splurges!

But to answer the original question about what I’m craving, here is what I heart more than anything during pregnancy (in addition to the above):

Pears - especially the Harry and David pears that are so juicy you bite into them and the juice just runs down your chin.

Sugar Cookies

Cook and Serve Vanilla Pudding (not instant!)

Vons/Safeway Sandwhiches - made MY way!
