Now that Matt and I have our own house and our own family, we decided we wanted to start our own Christmas traditions this year. We wanted to bring a bit of what we both grew up with, add a few touches and our own new traditions to carry on for our growing family.
On Christmas eve, my family goes to Catholic Mass then back to my parents house, where we stuff our selves with food, play games (the current favorite is "Pit") and just hang out. As the evening hours get later, everyone slowly returns home to prepare for the next morning's craziness!
At Matt's parents house, everyone gets together and they actually do their gift exchange on Christmas eve. Each person opens one present at a time and they take turns going around in a circle until all the presents are opened. For a small family like Matt's, this is possible and doesn't take too long, but for my family (with 5 sibilings, their spouses and 14 grandkids) - it's impossible!! Not only would it take 3 days to do, but we'd never get the kids to be patient enough to only open one at a time!
So this year, we spent Christmas eve both Conner and Welch style. After returning home from my parents house, we each opened 2 presents. One was of the givers choosing, and the other was a new pair of pajama's, one of our new traditions! Unfortunately, Piper was already down for the night by the time we got home, so Matt and I took advantage and popped open a bottle of Dom Perignon that had been given to us as a wedding gift (thanks Fellers!) and toasted to our new family and our new traditions (and our new PJ's!).
