The Addiction of Parenthood

A new friend and fellow new mom emailed me this article today, which I have to share. Ironically, this comes just days after several conversations with her and another new mom about how dramatically our lives have changed. A being so small and helpless has created such a HUGE difference in our lives - we all expected it, but no one could have prepared us, no matter how prepared we thought we were.

Parents Are Junkies

Life is now a constant race with little time to slow down or to relax. I race to get home from work to see my darling, race to get chores done around the house when she's sleeping, race to get my errands done so I can get home to see her and "tag" Matt so he can then go race to mow the lawn or work in his workshop, race to get dinner made because it's late and we're both starving, race through eating so I can feed her and get her to bed. At the end of each day, there is an hour or two that Matt and I have to ourselves where we can prop our feet up, enjoy a glass of wine and watch a TV show. After that hour, we're both ready and looking forward to closing our eyes and getting some sleep before we have to wake back up and start all over. But you know what? I wouldn't change a damned thing.

This article hits it head on. Yes, having kids creates stress. It creates more work, less sleep, more worry and less time to oneself. But at the end of the day, that stress is 100% worth it - when you get that beautiful smile or laugh from your child. Piper already brings Matt and I so much joy to our lives- her smiles just melt our hearts and makes any stress we have disappear. I can only imagine how much better it will get as she grows and begins to develop and grow more, and I can't wait!
