Hospital Trip #1

At dinner on Thursday night, the contractions continued and started getting about 10 minutes apart. We got home and spent the rest of the evening trying to relax and making sure our bags were packed and ready to go! My contractions were getting closer together and stronger, and I used the application on Tina (Matt's Iphone) to track them throughout the evening. They started getting closer together but they were pretty sporadic - running every 5, then 8, then 4, then 10 minutes apart. There were also only lasting about 30 seconds long. I finally called the doctor's office around 10pm and talked to the doctor on call - who said to wait until they were less sporadic and 3-5 minutes apart. So, Matt and I both went to bed but it didn't last long for me - the contractions started to get stronger and I simply couldn't relax.

So, I headed downstairs so I wouldn't wake Matt up (I figured at least one of us could get some sleep) and tried to work through the pain on my own. By 3am they were coming pretty steadily every 4-5 minutes, so I headed upstairs to wake Matt up and tell him it was time. I was nervous that we would wait too long and they were starting to get more painful so I wanted to head to the hospital! After piling all our crap into the truck (I don't pack light) we set off for the hospital. About 5 miles down the road, we passed a cop car sitting off to the side and we both joked about how funny it would be if we were pulled over - and about 10 seconds later, we saw the flashing lights behind us! Matt and I couldn't stop laughing - it was just typical us, getting pulled over for speeding on the way to the hospital! The cop walked up to Matt's window and Matt simply said "uh, my wife is in labor?!". The cop looked past Matt at me, with my pillow and blanket on my lap and the look of discomfort in my eyes and then said, "well, I guess I should let you guys go"! Matt jokes that he saved the 2 cars driving in front of us from getting DUI's since they were likely driving home from the bars!

We finally made it to the hospital - lugged all our bags and stuff in and got put in triage to be checked out. By this point, I realized that my contractions, as Murphy's Law proves, had slowed down and weren't coming as quickly, but were still just as painful. Go figure. We waited for the doctor for 45 minutes before he came in and checked me out. And to my utter dismay, he announced that I was only 1-2 centimeters dilated. To describe my emotions at that point would be to use words like furious, frustrated, irate, and pissed off! I couldn't believe that the pain I'd been suffering through the last several hours had only gotten me 1 centimeter further than I'd been earlier in the week at my doctors visit. All I could think of at that point was how long this whole labor thing was going to last and how long I'd have to deal with the pain of the contractions! If I was only 2 centimeters at that point and it already hurt that much, how much more was it going to hurt and how much longer was it going to take?

So, we got sent home. And had to lug all our crap back out to the truck and drive our exhausted selves back home at 4:30am. We learned our lesson though - the next time we went, we weren't going to take anything in with us until we knew we were going to be admitted! :) Check out the next post to see what happened next!
